Post & rung rocking armchair in Ash; Wych Elm bark seat
This chair was my ‘final piece’ as part of the Mastercrafts training programme. We were given the brief of designing and making ‘something’ from greenwood, to demonstrate the skills we had learnt during the preceding weeks of the training programme. I chose to make a Rocking Armchair, and although I didn’t finish it in time for the end of the programme; I have since added the rockers. In hindsight, setting out to create a design and make a Rocking Chair in eight days was a little ambitious. As a result this chair is nowhere near the standard I am striving for. I learnt a huge amount from making the chair, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. This has inspired me to continue to design and make further pieces.
The completed chair was on display at Forde Abbey during the 2010 summer season. It is now taken up pride of place at home and is used daily.
